FIRST EVER ISSUE – £5.99
YOUR chance to own a replica edition of the very first Boxing News – the oldest boxing magazine in the world – which was first available on September 11, 1909. Entitled Boxing (It would be 30 years before ‘News’ was added), this fascinating 24-page document serves as one of the finest pieces of boxing history available.
The mission statement is telling and highlights a philosophy that remains to this day: “Boxing is not offered to its public with an apology,” wrote editor John Murray. “We claim it is wanted, and wanted badly.
“It will stand for good, clean sport. Its success or failure is in the hands of those who believe in sport of that character. Our energies will be devoted to giving the best paper that time, thought and money can devise. It’s up to you, reader, to ‘help a good thing along’.”
Within the 24 pages are reports and opinion from the time, including the impending comeback of James J. Jeffries to challenge Jack Johnson where we criticise the racism that was already tainting the African American’s reign as world heavyweight champion.
You also will find cartoons and photographs, alongside fascinating adverts of the time, and a testimony from former world heavyweight king, James J. Corbett, who wrote: “I have just been handed an advance copy of Boxing and I must say I am delighted with it. I must, however, disagree with that part of the Editorial Ideas in which you say that this first issue is not as good as future ones will be. If they are to be better than this, then – gee whiz! – they will be good.”
Don’t miss out on your chance to own a very special piece of boxing history.
